Reconciling Technology-Driven and Experiential Approaches for Movement-Based Design

To understand opposing approaches in movement-based interaction design, I analyzed research works from what I defined as technology-driven design – which seeks to continuously improve gesture creation and recognition for both the user and the system – and experiential design – which explores nuances of aesthetics in movement, cultivates body awareness, and develops embodied design methods. I discussed future possibilites when integrating the first-person perspective into technology-driven design and capturing from the third-person perspective during experiential design by comparing particular project aspects: target users, study context, design phase, focuse of movement, and study goal.

My co-authors and myself offered our investigation to the community through a comparitive essay, published at the 32nd Francophone Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, entitled Reconciling Technology-Driven and Experiential Approaches for Movement-Based Design. Read the article here.
